About This Role

The Academic Success Advisor supports first-year and continuing students at Binghamton University, guiding them through academic, personal, and social transitions. This role utilizes data-informed advising and proactive outreach to promote student retention, persistence, and equitable outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Advise a diverse student population, focusing on first-year students and those with academic challenges
  • Engage students in reflective conversations about degree requirements and university policies
  • Employ motivational interviewing and strength-based advising to help students set goals
  • Conduct proactive outreach to students identified through early alert systems or faculty referrals
  • Serve as a primary contact for first-year students transitioning to Binghamton University
  • Partner with orientation and academic departments for seamless student transition
  • Track student participation and outcomes to evaluate first-year initiatives' effectiveness
  • Use student success dashboards, CRM systems, and data analytics to monitor advising activity
  • Maintain detailed advising records and notes in accordance with FERPA and university standards
  • Work closely with faculty, deans' offices, and academic support services to coordinate interventions

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in education, counseling, social sciences, or a related field
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in academic advising, student success coaching, or a comparable student support role
  • Effective decision-making, organizational, and time-management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt in a dynamic environment, manage multiple priorities, and build rapport with students from diverse backgrounds
  • Effective interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in education, counseling, social sciences, or a related field
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in academic advising, student success coaching, or a comparable student support role

Nice to Have

  • Experience with higher education technology systems (e.g., Banner, Peoplesoft, CRM Advise, Degree Works)
  • Familiarity with early-alert systems, and data-informed retention strategies
  • Training in motivational interviewing, student development theory, or equity-centered advising
  • Availability to work occasional evenings or weekends during peak advising periods
