The Academic Success Advisor supports first-year and continuing students at Binghamton University, guiding them through academic, personal, and social transitions. This role utilizes data-informed advising and proactive outreach to promote student retention, persistence, and equitable outcomes.
Responsibilities
- Advise a diverse student population, focusing on first-year students and those with academic challenges
- Engage students in reflective conversations about degree requirements and university policies
- Employ motivational interviewing and strength-based advising to help students set goals
- Conduct proactive outreach to students identified through early alert systems or faculty referrals
- Serve as a primary contact for first-year students transitioning to Binghamton University
- Partner with orientation and academic departments for seamless student transition
- Track student participation and outcomes to evaluate first-year initiatives' effectiveness
- Use student success dashboards, CRM systems, and data analytics to monitor advising activity
- Maintain detailed advising records and notes in accordance with FERPA and university standards
- Work closely with faculty, deans' offices, and academic support services to coordinate interventions
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in education, counseling, social sciences, or a related field
- Minimum of 1 year of experience in academic advising, student success coaching, or a comparable student support role
- Effective decision-making, organizational, and time-management skills
- Demonstrated ability to adapt in a dynamic environment, manage multiple priorities, and build rapport with students from diverse backgrounds
- Effective interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in education, counseling, social sciences, or a related field
- Minimum of 1 year of experience in academic advising, student success coaching, or a comparable student support role
Nice to Have
- Experience with higher education technology systems (e.g., Banner, Peoplesoft, CRM Advise, Degree Works)
- Familiarity with early-alert systems, and data-informed retention strategies
- Training in motivational interviewing, student development theory, or equity-centered advising
- Availability to work occasional evenings or weekends during peak advising periods
