This technical specialist performs journey-level engineering duties in highway construction, ensuring project accuracy and compliance with plans. The role involves inspecting projects, reviewing designs, preparing cost estimates, and supervising technicians to drive a safer transportation system for Arizona.
Responsibilities
- Inspect and examine highway construction projects, diaries, computations, materials test results and other documentation
- Ensure project measurements and payments are in accordance with project plans, special provisions, and supplemental agreements
- Calculate land area, materials quantities, and other quantitative measurements
- Confer with agency officials, staff members, and representatives of other agencies to acquire information for immediate determinations and decisions
- Review project for design clarity, accuracy, and constructability
- Review specifications and special provisions; prepare detailed cost estimates
- Determine whether all supporting information has been obtained for projects
- Compile information for work unit and write periodic reports on assigned activities
- Write detailed reports (Change Orders) based on research, investigation, or inquiry
- Attend work unit staff meetings; give and receive information; participate in problem solving and decision making
Requirements
- 5 to 10 years minimal work experience
- Knowledge of civil engineering principles and practices as applied to highway construction inspection
- Knowledge of computational and adjustment factors for engineering data and land description
- Knowledge of Federal and State statutes, Agency standards, policies and procedures applicable to highway construction inspection
- Knowledge of computer programs applicable to highway construction inspection
- Knowledge of principles of supervision and project management
- Skills in analyzing and evaluating a wide variety of engineering data
- Skills in researching, reading, and interpreting technical engineering documents
- Skills in oral and written communications
- Skills in change order and technical writing
- Skills in organizing and prioritizing work assignments
- Ability to use computational and adjustment factors and mathematical computations
- Ability to communicate written and orally
- Ability to safely drive a full-size pickup truck on and off-road
- Ability to work outdoors for extended time, exposed to heat, cold, dust and noise
- Ability to maintain professional, productive interpersonal relations with all highway construction partners and stakeholders
Qualifications
- 4 Year College Degree-Bachelor of Science is preferred. GED or high school diploma.
- 5 to 10 years minimal level of work experience is required.
