Surgical Pathology Assistant I

About This Role

This position receives and triages tissue and cytology specimens, provides necessary support functions for pathologists, and assists with various procedures such as frozen sections and bone marrows. The role is crucial for maintaining specimen integrity and providing clerical assistance within a laboratory setting.

Responsibilities

• Receive, accession, and label specimens and corresponding paperwork, ensuring proper identification and specimen integrity
• Perform required computer and clerical functions for surgical and cytology specimens
• Assist pathologists or pathologist assistants with set-up functions, including printing cassettes
• Prepare containers and cassettes for shipment to appropriate processing sites
• Assist with frozen sections by operating a cryostat, processing, cutting, and staining fresh samples
• Assist with autopsies by ensuring supplies are available and reviewing documentation
• Assist with procedures such as fine needle aspirations and bone marrows
• Provide clerical assistance, including triaging phone calls and troubleshooting specimen-related problems
• Maintain all equipment, staining protocols, slide and block filing systems, and retained tissue specimens

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent
• 6 months previous medical laboratory experience in specimen handling skills
• Good communication, comprehension, and typing skills
• Significant understanding and knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices and procedures within the Pathology field
• Evidence of increasing responsibility in personnel interaction and organizational skills

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent
• 6 months previous medical laboratory experience in specimen handling skills

• Additional related education and/or experience
• AA degree
