Serve as a Staff Attorney for the Citizens Police Oversight Commission, assisting with legal work including policy development, compliance, advocacy, and litigation. This role contributes to independent civilian oversight of the Philadelphia Police Department's policies and practices.
Responsibilities
- Conduct legal research and write correspondence, memoranda, reports, and policy documents concerning policing, 4th Amendment issues, civil rights, labor, administrative, and local agency law
- Conduct other desk research and basic data analysis and draft/contribute to policy reports
- Draft and revise agency policies for staff and board members, answering legal questions as they arise
- Identify and develop new work and projects for the agency in alignment with legislation
- Communicate with PPD divisions and other city partners to request and obtain information and develop written agreements
- Prepare materials to educate the public about legal issues relevant to policing
- Support the policy and advocacy work of the agency
- Perform litigation tasks, as needed
Qualifications
- Law degree from an ABA accredited law school
- At least two (2) years of relevant experience within a legal setting is preferred
Nice to Have
- Experience with policing, criminal justice system, civil rights, or administrative discipline proceedings
- Good academic credentials and/or work experience
- Strong communication, analytical, and writing skills
