Special Education Paraprofessional

About This Role

The Special Education Paraprofessional assists special education teachers in supervising and providing instructional support to students with individualized education programs (IEPs) in a Developmental Learning Center classroom, focusing on academic, social, and independence/self-care skills. This role supports student progress and maintains a positive learning environment.

Responsibilities

• Work closely with the Special Education Teacher in remediating learning deficiencies
• Assist in supervising and maintaining classroom and transitions
• Maintain files on individual student’s progress as directed
• Maintain a positive learning environment
• Assist students with self-care needs (personal hygiene, toileting, feeding, etc.)
• Collect data on IEP goals and objectives
• Implement academic, social skills, and behavioral programs as directed by the teacher
• Support students as needed in required learning settings (general education, special education, recess, lunch)
• Direct individual and group activities
• Assist with addressing the health and safety needs of students
• Respect the confidentiality of students
• Attend approved workshops to enhance abilities to work with students
• Meet all timelines for time sheets, travel vouchers and required data collection

Requirements

• Completed at least two years of study at an institution of higher education OR obtained an associate (or higher) degree OR passed ETS paraprofessional assessment
• Ability to assist students with self-care needs
• SafetyCare trained (or willing to be trained as soon as possible after hiring)
