About This Role

The Specimen Sorter is responsible for the accurate receipt, labeling, and initial handling of biological specimens in a laboratory setting. This role involves scanning, logging, accessioning, sorting, and data entry for incoming deliveries.

Responsibilities

  • Receive, log, and verify specimens, ensuring proper labeling, quantity, condition, and integrity.
  • Sort and organize incoming specimens by type, priority, and destination for processing.
  • Maintain accurate specimen tracking, labeling, and categorization.
  • Conduct initial quality assessments to ensure specimens are suitable for testing.
  • Report any issues with specimens (e.g., damage, improper labeling) to relevant personnel.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and regulatory standards for specimen handling, storage, and disposal.
  • Enter specimen data accurately into laboratory management systems.
  • Update records and monitor sample status throughout the processing workflow.
  • Log deliveries into the national system using scanning technology.
  • Prepare specimens for analysis and ensure correct identification and labeling.
  • Communicate updates and resolve specimen-related inquiries with internal teams and clients.
  • Collaborate with team members to complete tasks efficiently and meet department goals.
  • Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) and remain seated for extended periods as needed.
  • Adapt to changing priorities and workload volumes to maintain operational efficiency.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Ability to accurately identify specimens and enter relevant information
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • Skilled in organizing and managing multiple specimens and related documentation
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety protocols, including biological materials handling and disposal
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within a team
  • Strong problem-solving skills for specimen tracking/scanning discrepancies
  • Comfortable handling blood, urine, and saliva specimens
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • At least 1 year of experience in intake, receiving, data entry or a similar role in a laboratory or healthcare setting preferred.
