About This Role

This role involves evaluating bid specifications and drawings for heavy civil projects including excavation, asphalt, and concrete scopes of work, ensuring all requirements are researched to successfully bid and win projects. The Site Estimator develops creative solutions to problems and identifies ways to increase profit while managing bid administration and subcontractor communication.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate bid specifications and drawings to determine scope and values for projects
  • Develop creative solutions to problems and identify ways to deliver additional profit
  • Administer bids by preparing and maintaining status of plan reproduction and subcontractor communication
  • Prepare subcontractor bid packages and transmit addenda or other bid information
  • Ensure proper subcontractor coverage on bid day and seek better pricing when possible
  • Submit 100% of bids and budgets by the bid deadline
  • Thoroughly review bid requirements, ask follow-up questions, and understand trade scopes
  • Develop RFIs and clarifications, perform comprehensive bid day analysis, and scope specific trades
  • Create bid lists that fit the scope of the job and minimize exclusions
  • Include value-engineering ideas on every bid
  • Translate budget into Viewpoint within one week of notification of low bid
  • Schedule handoff meetings to properly turn over bid documents and sub buyout information to Project Management
  • Review drawings and job costs with the Project Management team, highlighting areas of concern
  • Complete project kick-off forms to ensure compliance
  • Thoroughly check requirements to buy the proper scope and award subcontractors in a timely manner
  • Ensure subcontractors commit to the project schedule and provide them with necessary information
  • Seek and qualify new subcontractors, holding them to Client standards

Requirements

  • Expertise in heavy civil work including excavation, asphalt, and concrete scopes of work
  • Heavy highway construction industry practices and procedures
  • Proficient in Outlook, Excel, Word, Viewpoint and HCSS Heavy Bid and Heavy Job
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task across several bids at the same time
  • Self-directed and motivated
  • Demonstrated leadership skills
  • Demonstrated ability to complete projects on time and on budget
  • Strong negotiation skills

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree (B.S.) in Civil Engineering or Construction Management or 8-12 years of heavy highway or airport experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
