About This Role

This role involves overseeing and managing the risk management program for assigned entities within Banner Health, focusing on enhancing patient safety, quality of care, and minimizing financial losses.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the entity's risk management activities, including corporate insurance programs and day-to-day administration
  • Analyze risk management data and conduct educational programs for risk management
  • Ensure compliance with risk management standards set by The Joint Commission (TJC) and other agencies
  • Review and formulate policy or organizational changes, providing recommendations for senior management approval
  • Supervise and provide program direction to Risk Managers and Risk Specialists
  • Oversee budget development for assigned entities and secure management approval
  • Plan and implement loss prevention and loss control programs for all employees, physicians, and residents
  • Monitor legislative activities affecting risk management programs and participate in the legislative process
  • Develop, implement, and monitor risk management plans and entity-specific goals
  • Conduct systems analyses to identify patterns leading to compensable events and design risk management surveys/studies
  • Provide consultative advice to senior management, administrators, physicians, and other personnel on patient safety and risk management issues
  • Work with Medical Staff Services to develop risk management profiles for physicians and integrate into credentialing
  • Inform department directors of occurrences, findings, and risk management recommendations, assisting in risk elimination
  • Participate in root cause analysis for adverse drug events and sentinel events, reporting to appropriate parties
  • Direct loss control/loss prevention activities, supervise statistical trending of losses, and analyze patterns
  • Respond to professional and facility liability questions from physicians, nurses, and other personnel
  • Lead organization-wide approach on disclosure of medical errors and assist in resolving treatment issues
  • Recommend appropriate revisions to policies and procedures to reduce future occurrences and minimize risks
  • Assist Banner Health Claims team and legal counsel in litigated claims, directing record release for subpoenas and inquiries
  • Analyze the risk of loss versus cost of reducing risk and supervise accumulation of risk management cost data

Requirements

  • Knowledge of federal and state statutes specific to healthcare

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in nursing or related field
  • 6-9 years in Risk Management or equivalent experience, with a clinical background preferably in critical care
