The Project Engineer is a core member of the project leadership team responsible for ensuring disciplined execution of contract administration, cost control, scheduling, documentation, and technical coordination on heavy civil construction projects. This role reports to the Project Manager and serves as the primary coordinator between field operations, subcontractors, vendors, and ownership representatives.
Responsibilities
- Track and validate installed quantities and productivity metrics
- Compare actual performance against budgeted production rates
- Ensure work complies with plans, specifications, and regulatory standards
- Oversee submittals, material approvals, and inspection documentation
- Support enforcement of site-specific safety plans and documentation of activities
- Interpret and administer contract documents, drawings, and specifications
- Manage RFIs, submittals, change orders, and correspondence
- Assist in developing and maintaining project budgets, tracking job costs, and forecasting cost-to-complete
- Assist in developing and updating baseline and recovery schedules
- Prepare and distribute accurate daily, weekly, and monthly project reports
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related field
- 2-6+ years of experience in heavy civil construction
- Experience tracking job costs, production rates, and cost-to-complete forecasting
- Experience supporting schedule updates and analyzing delays
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related field
- 2–6+ years of experience in heavy civil construction (DOT, highways, bridges, utilities, earthwork, concrete, paving, or site development)
Nice to Have
- EIT certification
- Proficiency in construction management software (e.g., HCSS, Procore, Viewpoint)
- Familiarity with Bluebeam, Primavera P6, or Microsoft Project
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills for quantity tracking and cost analysis
- Experience managing RFIs, submittals, change orders, and subcontractor documentation
