Phlebotomist

About This Role

Perform phlebotomy with minimal supervision and manage various clerical and computer-related activities to meet patient needs. This role involves interacting with patients of all ages and maintaining the highest level of care.

Responsibilities

• Perform phlebotomy activities on patients of all ages with minimal supervision
• Collect Stat, Timed and other samples by venipuncture or capillary puncture
• Verify all patient information prior to specimen collection
• Label all samples collected
• Initial, Time and Date all blood specimen tubes
• Maintain specimen integrity by using aseptic technique and observing isolation procedures
• Perform data collecting, filing, faxing, assisting technologist
• Maintain copies of outpatient orders and manually requested patient tests in accordance with regulatory requirements
• Report system problems to the Lab Supervisor/Lead Phlebotomist and Health Quest IT Department
• Perform specimen processing of all samples submitted to laboratory for testing
• Verify all samples are labeled correctly and in correct containers/tubes/media
• Centrifuge samples
• Visually verify all sample integrity prior to pick up by Vassar Diagnostics and follow cancellation policy for inadequate samples
• Provide accurate information and timely resolution to physicians/nursing who call the lab
• Provide assistance to all incoming phone calls and route to appropriate individuals
• Record messages accurately and route to appropriate individual
• Perform computer related activities as required, including monitoring patient collection in Cerner
• Maintain accuracy of orders in computer, sensor for duplicates or errors
• Print labels from computers and reprint if necessary
• Generate laboratory manifest and packaging of all samples for courier pick up
• Demonstrate competency with use of laboratory hand-held equipment (PT/INR POC monitor) and label printer
