About This Role

Perform a variety of accurate and efficient specimen collection and handling procedures, including venipuncture, arterial puncture, and capillary puncture, from various patient settings. Ensure proper patient identification and prepare specimens for processing while adhering to quality control standards.

Responsibilities

  • Perform all work promptly and accurately
  • Collect blood from patients using venipuncture, arterial puncture, capillary puncture, or special techniques according to established laboratory procedure
  • Verify patient identification prior to specimen collection to assure accurate testing
  • Respond promptly to any request for specimen collection and communicate effectively if delays occur
  • Perform bedside glucose testing at specific times requested and adhere to all quality control standards
  • Prepare specimens for processing by accurately identifying appropriate specimen, delivering to department, entering patient information, and verifying proper test order
  • Instruct and assist patients with proper collection of various specimens (e.g., clean catch urine, 24 hour urine, chain of custody)
  • Keep work organized to avoid confusion and potential for error
  • Communicate effectively with those requiring assistance or service from the lab, providing information regarding specimen collection and handling
  • Seek assistance from supervisor when difficulty in proper specimen handling or interpretation of physician orders is encountered
  • Prepare all specimens for reference laboratory testing by assuring proper preservation, handling, requisition completion, and labeling
  • Communicate effectively and courteously with peers and all staff members
  • Maintain all supplies and equipment for blood collection in all collection areas in an organized and clean manner
  • Assist with the distribution of reports to nursing stations, physician offices, or other destinations
  • Assist with glassware washing and distribution within the laboratory as requested
  • Assist with training and orienting personnel to specimen collection procedures
  • Train and orient anyone responsible for specimen collection as requested
  • Consistently work to achieve and maintain departmental operations meeting CAP, JCAHO, CLIA, and PA Department of Health standards
  • Maintain current knowledge of laboratory and hospital policies and procedures as well as performance standards
  • Demonstrate continual awareness of and compliance with safety, infection control, and quality assurance procedures
  • Maintain all departmental equipment and supplies
  • Maintain sufficient inventory of departmental reagents and supplies and submit requests to supervisor for additional materials

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Graduate of a certified Phlebotomy program or equivalent
  • Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers, patients, medical staff, visitors, and other Medical Center personnel
  • Ability to make mature judgments
  • Possess a pleasant personality for dealing with patients
  • Certified Phlebotomist with ASCP, AMT, CLSI or equivalent certification
  • Valid Driver’s License and an available vehicle
  • Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS)

Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalent; Graduate of a certified Phlebotomy program or equivalent

Nice to Have

  • Experience in a hospital laboratory as a phlebotomist

Certifications

Certified Phlebotomist with ASCP, AMT, CLSI or equivalent certification (Required)
