About This Role

This role is for a Patient Care Associate Student at Brigham and Women's Hospital, serving as a key member of the patient care team. The PCA II supports registered nurses with clinical tasks, ensuring a safe environment and responding to patient and family needs while maintaining operational efficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Anticipate and identify patient safety risks, in cooperation with licensed nurse, and take appropriate action to reduce and/or eliminate risks.
  • Perform routine patient room rounds to address patient needs.
  • Follow and maintain restraint policies under the supervision of a licensed nurse.
  • Provide 1:1 monitoring as a patient observer for patients at risk for injury.
  • Utilize proper body mechanics in moving and assisting patients to prevent personal injury.
  • Communicate effectively with staff and all members of the interdisciplinary health care team.
  • Accurately collect and record patient data (vital signs, intake and output, blood sugar, weights, restraint care/monitoring, other) and comply with hospital documentation standards.
  • Assist with admission, discharge, and transfer of patients, including preparing rooms and transporting belongings.
  • Provide personal care to patients including bathing, skin care, shaving, mouth care, and changing linens.
  • Perform EKGs and blood glucose monitoring as directed, per hospital policy and procedure.

Requirements

  • Ability to understand role in patient care activities
  • Knowledge of hospital, division, and unit policies and procedures
  • Effective communication skills with staff, health care team, and patients/significant others

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent preferred
  • 0-1 year patient care experience preferred
