The Patient Care Assistant II proficiently performs all aspects of the PCA role under the direction of a Registered Nurse. This role supports clinical tasks such as blood glucose monitoring and EKGs, responding to patient needs to ensure efficient unit operation and excellent patient and family-centered care.
Responsibilities
- Anticipate and identify patient safety risks, taking action to reduce or eliminate them
- Perform routine patient room rounds to address patient needs and maintain proper bed height, side rails, and call light placement
- Monitor patients at risk for injury as a patient observer (1:1 monitoring)
- Maintain confidentiality and privacy of patient, employee, and hospital information
- Efficiently organize time and prioritize patient care needs, assisting co-workers as requested
- Communicate timely and ongoing verbal information with the RN regarding patient condition and status of delegated tasks
- Accurately collect and record patient data such as vital signs, intake/output, blood sugar, and weights
- Assist with admission, discharge, and transfer of patients, including preparing rooms and transporting belongings
- Provide personal care to patients including bathing, skin care, grooming, and changing linens
- Support patient comfort and pain relief by coordinating rest periods, minimizing noise, and assisting in bed positioning
- Perform simple dressing changes using aseptic technique and assist with simple and complex treatments or procedures
- Perform EKGs and blood glucose monitoring as directed, documenting results completely and accurately
- Initiate patient belongings tracking forms and secure belongings in accordance with hospital policy
- Respond promptly and courteously to all patient call lights and requests
Requirements
- Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions
- Knowledge of medical terminology
- Strong patient/customer service skills
- Ability to lift up to 35 pounds
- Proficient computer skills for electronic medical records
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or Equivalent preferred
- 1-2 years preferred experience working in patient care/elder care
