About This Role

Preserve and protect life and property within the university community by performing public safety duties, responding to incidents, and ensuring crime prevention in accordance with regulations. Engage positively with a diverse community and work as part of a team to support 24-hour campus operations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform vehicular and foot patrols of campus, conducting routine surveillance
  • Respond to routine complaints and calls for service from students, faculty, staff, and visitors
  • Conduct thorough and detailed preliminary investigations of all reported incidents
  • Establish a visible public safety presence, detecting and rendering assistance as necessary
  • Preserve and protect University property from theft, vandalism, and mishandling
  • Safeguard University personnel and other persons, as well as their property on campus
  • Act as armed first responder to all emergencies on campus to protect life and property
  • Respond to all reported disturbances, emergencies, and suspicious circumstances in residence halls
  • Assure that order is maintained at University events and respond to complaints of disorderly behavior
  • Inspect, maintain, and secure all assigned and departmental issued equipment
  • Work collaboratively and maintain effective liaison with local outside law enforcement agencies
  • Provide building security, assuming responsibility for building access, locking, and unlocking doors
  • Provide traffic and parking enforcement duties on campus and assist motorists with disabled vehicles

Requirements

  • Certified Basic Law Enforcement Officer, in good standing, in Illinois
  • 3-5 years of experience (within the last 3 years) as a sworn officer in public safety or police agency
  • Eligible for, or possess, a valid Driver’s License
  • Eligible for, or possess, a valid Firearm Owner’s Identification (FOID) Card
  • Ability to run, walk, stand for long periods of time; climb, stoop, lift and carry equipment and or injured individuals
  • Physically fit and able to defend community members and one's self from physical assault

Qualifications

  • One of the following: (1) Bachelors degree; (2) Associates degree in Criminal Justice, or; (3) High school diploma with a specific related experience including public safety/civilian/military/police experience
  • 3-5 years of experience (within the last 3 years) as a sworn officer in public safety or police agency, preferably in a college or university environment.

Nice to Have

  • Previous experience in law enforcement in a college or university environment
  • Experience with software systems to manage video surveillance and/or access control
  • Bilingual

Certifications

Certified Basic Law Enforcement Officer in Illinois (Required)
