The Adult Palliative Care Nurse Practitioner serves as an expert practitioner delivering patient care, educating providers, and leading programs within an interdisciplinary palliative care team. This role involves assessing, diagnosing, and treating complex patient responses to serious illness, emphasizing symptom management and compassionate communication. The practitioner also plays a vital part in education, quality monitoring, and leadership within the palliative care service.
Responsibilities
- Demonstrate advanced clinical judgment in the assessment, physical examination, diagnosis, planning, and treatment of complex responses to serious illness.
- Provide symptom management during illness exacerbations and at the end-of-life.
- Initiate compassionate communication with patients and families regarding goals of care and advanced care planning.
- Establish effective interpersonal relationships with providers from all clinical departments and interdisciplinary colleagues.
- Promote palliative care concepts to BWH staff regarding comprehensive patient needs.
- Act as a preceptor for nursing students and staff, and participate in orientation of new staff.
- Participate in nursing research and maintain an understanding of current research in related clinical areas.
- Order, interpret, and evaluate appropriate lab and diagnostic tests.
- Order medications and write prescriptions according to organizational and regulatory policies and procedures.
- Record pertinent patient care findings in the medical record.
Requirements
- Master's in Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) or PhD Degree in Nursing
- Completion of an accredited Master’s or post Masters’ degree in Adult program
- Current Adult/Gerontology (AGNP) or Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) Certification
- Current APRN License to practice in Massachusetts
- DEA registration
- Minimum 3 years current clinical nurse practitioner experience caring for a Palliative Care patient population
- Clinical nurse practitioner experience in an acute care consultative capacity
Qualifications
- Master's in Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) or PhD Degree in Nursing
- Minimum 3 years current clinical nurse practitioner experience caring for a Palliative Care patient population, plus clinical nurse practitioner experience in an acute care consultative capacity.
Nice to Have
- Hospice or Palliative Care Specialty Certification
- Advanced practice Palliative Care residency or fellowship completion
