The Adult Palliative Care Nurse Practitioner provides expert patient care, education, and program leadership as part of an interdisciplinary palliative care team at Brigham and Women's Hospital. This role involves advanced clinical judgment in assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and communication with patients and families facing serious illnesses.
Responsibilities
- Demonstrate advanced clinical judgment and skill in the assessment, physical examination, diagnosis, planning, and treatment of complex responses to serious illness.
- Provide symptom management during illness exacerbations and at the end-of-life.
- Initiate compassionate communication with patients and families around goals of care, advanced care planning, and end-of-life issues.
- Establish effective interpersonal relationships with providers from all clinical departments and interdisciplinary colleagues.
- Promote the interdisciplinary team approach in the provision of palliative care to the patient and family.
- Utilize clinical process improvement and/or research to evaluate current theories and palliative care practice.
- Order, interpret, and evaluate appropriate lab and diagnostic tests.
- Order medications and write prescriptions according to organizational and regulatory policies and procedures.
- Record pertinent patient care findings in the medical record.
- Act as preceptor for nursing students and staff as requested.
Requirements
- Master's, DNP, or PhD in Nursing
- Completion of a Master's or post Masters' degree in Adult program accredited by the CCNE or NLNAC
- APRN national certification
- Current Adult/Gerontology (AGNP) or Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) Certification
- Current APRN License to practice in Massachusetts
- DEA registration
- 3+ years clinical NP experience in Palliative Care population
- Clinical NP experience in an acute care consultative capacity
Qualifications
- Master's in Nursing (MSN) (or) Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) (or) PhD Degree in Nursing
- Minimum 3 years current clinical nurse practitioner experience caring for a Palliative Care patient population, including acute care consultative capacity.
Nice to Have
- Hospice or Palliative Care Specialty Certification
- Advanced practice Palliative Care residency or fellowship completion
