Perform and report routine and special laboratory tests on clinical specimens to assist in diagnosis and monitoring of patients, ensuring compliance with quality control and safety guidelines.
Responsibilities
- Perform analyses in hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, coagulation, blood bank and microbiology according to expected performance standards
- Perform venipuncture, finger stick, or heel stick on identified patients by physician's request
- Keep documented records current regarding maintenance and quality control
- Follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results
- Maintain records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens
- Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed
- Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and correct them or immediately notify a supervisor
- Follow the laboratory's established corrective action policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within acceptable levels of performance
- Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from established performance specifications
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological science, or medical technology
- Comprehensive knowledge of applicable safety, quality control, and specimen handling guidelines and procedures
- Skilled in using applicable laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, meters, microscopes, incubators, pipettes, autoclaves, and sterilizers
- Ability to work quickly and accurately under strict deadlines
- Knowledge of the theory and practice of clinical laboratory methods and instrumentation
- Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, laboratory medicine, disease processes, and laboratory procedures
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of all patient and/or employee information
- Fluent in English (read, write, speak)
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological science, or medical technology from an accredited institution
- 1-2 years of acute care hospital lab experience in high complexity testing preferred.
