About This Role

Provide daily pharmaceutical supportive services under the supervision of a pharmacist, ensuring compliance with regulations and department procedures. This role involves responding to routine and emergency requests, participating in education activities, and supporting continuous quality improvement initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret physician's medication orders, filling, processing, and dispensing medications with final pharmacist check
  • Maintain cleanliness and aseptic technique while preparing intravenous admixtures and large volume parenterals according to USP 797/USP 800 Guidelines
  • Deliver controlled substances and medications to nursing units' automated medication dispensing cabinets (ADC) and patient care areas
  • Prepare medications and load/unload them into ADCs with barcode scanning, filling inventory needs for nursing units
  • Support drug inventory processes, including rotation, restocking, and maintaining a clean work area
  • Answer phones according to established etiquette, directing calls to appropriate personnel and referring emergencies to a pharmacist
  • Complete nursing unit inspections, restock crash cart trays and OCMCA boxes, and alert management of discrepancies
  • Fill controlled substance orders, reconcile daily discrepancies, and report unusual activity to prevent drug diversion
  • Prepare and package chemotherapy and other special handling medications under pharmacist supervision, adhering to safety measures
  • Utilize pharmacy computer systems to bill/credit patients for medication, maintain investigational drug research records, and validate doses
  • Operate the unit dose packaging machine accurately and efficiently
  • Track medication delivery to nursing units using the MedBoard software system and barcode scanning

Requirements

  • High School Graduate or GED equivalent
  • Current licensure by the State of Michigan as Pharmacy Technician
  • Essential mathematics skills
  • Effective computer and keyboarding skills
  • Ability to work with Pharmacy Information Systems and automation
  • Excellent critical thinking skills
  • Detail oriented and passionate about medication and patient safety
  • Excellent customer service orientation skills

Qualifications

  • High School Graduate or GED equivalent. Completion of a formal Pharmacy Technician educational program and/or completion of an Associate's Degree is preferred.
  • Previous pharmacy experience, hospital-based pharmacy experience preferred. Formal Pharmacy Technician program experiential education may be considered in lieu of work experience.
