About This Role

The Laboratory Assistant I performs specific pre-analytical, analytical and post analytical tasks, prioritizing incoming specimens and ensuring accuracy of orders and timely distribution.

Responsibilities

  • Prioritize incoming specimens and process in accordance with department safety guidelines.
  • Review pending log during and at end of shift.
  • Review orders received for accuracy of physician request and integrity of specimen collected.
  • Generate labels and attach them accurately to specimen/blood samples.
  • Distribute all specimens in a timely manner.
  • Resolve processing conflicts with orders and arrange for re-collection.
  • Prioritize workload to ensure priority of testing request is met.
  • Perform microbiology setups when assigned to work second or third shifts.
  • Answer phone in specimen processing, relaying messages to technologists or answering questions.
  • Perform all required quality control, notifying supervisor of any values that do not meet set criteria.
  • Collect chain of custody drug screens and follow guidelines for glucose tolerance testing.
  • Research orders for reference work and review specimens for proper type, volume, and storage requirements.
  • Inventory reference laboratory supplies and maintain adequate stock at work stations.
  • Generate batches for specimen pickup and receive batches from Outreach Laboratory.
  • Maintain a neat and clean work area, stock storage areas, clean equipment and instruments.
  • Collect adequate and correct specimens via venipuncture, capillary puncture, or arterial collections.
  • Review all out-patient orders for completeness and accuracy and file them appropriately.
  • Enter all specimen comments as needed and use good safety practices.
  • Provide proper instructions to patients for urine collection and diet restrictions.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • One year experience as a phlebotomist or lab assistant

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • One year experience as a phlebotomist or as lab assistant required.

Nice to Have

  • PBT (ASCP) certification
