This role involves providing comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services for patients with endocrine system tumors within MD Anderson's Endocrine Neoplasia And Hormonal Disorders Department. The Advanced Practice Provider will manage endocrine-related conditions, coordinate patient care, and contribute to clinical research.
Responsibilities
- Provide medical skills within scope of practice, including covering inpatient clinical practice for Endocrinology Service-Diabetes
- Manage endocrinopathies and endocrine effects of chemotherapy agents
- Assess glucose needs and lipid control, manage multiple-dose insulin and insulin pumps
- Conduct comprehensive health assessments, develop treatment plans, and continuously evaluate care outcomes
- Work autonomously as defined by the nurse practice act or collaborate with the healthcare team
- Attend Diabetes Services Meetings and Division of Internal Medicine Grand Rounds
- Share responsibility with other APPs for inpatient services coverage, triage new patients, and consultations
- Provide initial assessment and management of urgent issues related to complex, critical endocrinology-diabetes needs at night
- Perform inpatient consultations and follow-up visits, as assigned by Endocrine and/or Diabetes Attending on Service
- Review endocrine discharge instructions, assist with test claims for inpatients pending discharge, and ensure appropriate diabetes medications
- Round on patients not seen by day team to ensure glycemic control and titrate insulin
- Respond to overnight calls from patients or clinical team members and requests from askMDAnderson
- Dictate notes on consult and follow-up patients
- Provide patient and trainee education, participate in clinical protocol tasks, and act as a liaison
- Participate and collaborate on clinical research protocols under direct supervision of faculty physicians
Requirements
- Advanced Practice Provider (APP) or Physician Assistant with strong foundation in endocrinology and diabetes management
- Ability to work 6pm-6am rotating weekends and holidays
- 2 years Professional clinical experience or successful completion of a one year advanced practice provider fellowship/residency program
- Written authorization from the Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners (TSBPAE) to function as Physician Assistant OR Written authorization from the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) to function as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse
- Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
Qualifications
- Degree requirements as defined by the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) or Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners (TSBPAE)
- 2 years Professional clinical experience or 1 year advanced practice provider fellowship/residency program; 3-5 years preferred.
Nice to Have
- 3-5 years experience as a clinical advanced practice provider
- Previous clinical practice in oncology, critical care, internal medicine, hospital medicine or pediatrics
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Certification
