Independent Contractor-Transcriber

About This Role

This Independent Contractor-Transcriber role involves accurately converting audio/visual recordings into written transcripts for the Department of Justice (DOJ), Office of the Inspector General (OIG). The transcriber will ensure quality and confidentiality, working on-call per project.

Responsibilities

• Accurately convert audio/visual recordings into written text, ensuring correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation
• Review and refine transcripts to maintain clarity, consistency, and accuracy
• Structure and format transcripts according to DOJ OIG guidelines and formatting requirements
• Handle sensitive information securely and maintain strict confidentiality standards
• Follow company protocols, style guides, and DOJ OIG-specific instructions
• Collaborate with proofreaders, translators, and the Program Manager to ensure high-quality output
• Manage time efficiently to meet assignment deadlines
• Read typed translations and verbatim transcripts while listening to the recording to validate content (if proofreading)
• Make edits to ensure conformance with established templates/standards, style guides, spelling of names per glossary, and correct typographical and grammatical errors (if proofreading)
• Report to a DOJ-cleared facility to perform work

Requirements

• At least 2 years of transcription experience
• Fluent in English
• Proficient in English grammar
• Active security clearance at Secret or Top Secret
• Tier 5 background investigation or ability to obtain one
• U.S. citizen
• Meet DOJ residency requirements

Qualifications

• At least 2 years of transcription experience

• Experience using Infinity USB Foot Pedal (IN-USB-2)
• Experience using GearPlayer 4 Transcription Software
