As a Manager in the Engagement Consultation (EC) team within the Independence & Conflicts Network (ICN), you will advise Deloitte engagement teams on auditor independence requirements and their impacts on professional services. This consultative role involves collaborating with various business functions to navigate independence considerations and ensure compliance with regulations.
Responsibilities
- Work closely with Partners, Principals, Managing Directors (PPMDs) and Senior Managers within ICN and across Deloitte's service lines and business functions to provide guidance on engagement-related independence matters.
- Address independence questions/concerns related to services and relationships with clients, both within and outside the U.S.
- Handle matters arising from client mergers and acquisitions (M&A) or from client initial public offerings (IPOs).
- Evaluate independence risks related to affiliate relationships with audit clients, including client structures and investments.
- Perform independence risk evaluations on newly developed solutions and Deloitte's latest technology-enabled capabilities, including GenAI and Agentic AI.
- Conduct research and analysis, draft conclusions and communications, and strategize next steps in coordination with senior team members.
- Interpret and implement new and existing regulations relating to permissible non-attest services for the Deloitte US entities, providing advice and guidance to client-facing teams.
- Participate in policy setting by performing research and drafting communications aimed at increasing awareness and understanding of current, new, or changing independence rules.
- Create and revise training courses and materials to address rule changes and new interpretations of existing rules identified during consultations with regulators.
- Work on special projects both independently and collaboratively with PPMDs and engagement teams, involving senior members for input as necessary.
Requirements
- Bachelors' degree (preferably accounting, finance, business, compliance, or legal)
- 5 - 8+ years of related experience, ideally in a professional services role and environment
- Proficient in the use of standard office-productivity tools (e.g., Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, OneNote, Teams, etc.)
- Ability and willingness to learn and effectively use AI-enabled tools and emerging technology solutions to support research, analysis, documentation, and communication in a fast-paced, consultative environment
- Strong research and investigative skills to apply professional judgment in analyzing and evaluating proposed client services.
- Ability to partner with ICN and engagement leadership to frame questions/issues clearly, align on independence risks, and drive timely decisions.
- Deep experience collaborating with diverse stakeholders, enabling direct interaction with senior leaders.
- Comfortable navigating nuances and complexities in sensitive or emerging areas, with the ability to learn quickly and apply new requirements 'on the fly'.
- Strong communication skills across audiences and levels of seniority globally, including the ability to translate technical requirements into clear, actionable guidance.
- Strong documentation and formal business writing skills, including drafting clear, well-structured summaries, recommendations, and consultation outputs.
- Open-mindedness, nimbleness, and agility, enabling quick understanding of new business services, offerings, technologies and regulatory expectations.
- Positive attitude, initiative, good judgment, curiosity, and dedication to quality with the ability to react positively, as priorities and deadlines shift and multiple initiatives run in parallel.
- Outstanding attention to detail, plus strong technical, organizational, and analytical skills.
- Effective time management and prioritization skills, including being responsive to requests from clients.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree (preferably accounting, finance, business, compliance, or legal)
- 5 - 8+ years of related experience, ideally in a professional services role and environment
Nice to Have
- An understanding of Independence requirements for professional auditing firms
- Experience in regulatory compliance, risk assessment and internal controls and interpretation of rules, regulations, and standards
- Experience in public accounting
- Strong understanding of Deloitte's businesses, service offerings, and how services are delivered
- Knowledge of IFRS and US GAAP standards
- U.S. CPA and/or advanced degree in related areas such as finance, accounting, business, or law
