This Hospital Coder position applies expert knowledge of inpatient coding and classification systems to accurately select diagnostic and procedural codes, ensuring optimal and legal reimbursement for healthcare services. The role is remote and requires continuous education to advance coding practices.
Responsibilities
- Use a computerized encoding system to facilitate accurate coding and sequence diagnoses and procedures by following ICD-10-CM/PCS, UHDDS, Medicare, Medicaid, and fiscal intermediary guidelines.
- Support accurate reporting of healthcare data elements for external purposes such as reimbursement, value-based purchasing, population health, quality, patient safety, and research.
- Query providers for clarification and/or additional documentation when health record information is conflicting, incomplete, or ambiguous.
- Advance coding knowledge and practice through continuing education, meeting all requirements.
- Demonstrate integrity, ethical and legal coding practices, and foster trust in professional activities.
- Utilize official coding rules and guidelines to apply the most accurate coding for patient services on hospital claims.
- Comply with comprehensive internal coding policies and procedures consistent with regulatory requirements.
- Attend coding meetings and roundtable sessions, and participate in daily huddles and LEAN problem-solving activities.
- Maintain focus and avoid distractions while working and participating in meetings.
- Ensure camera is on while attending Teams calls and assist with organizing the shared drive for the medical coding department.
Requirements
- High School Diploma/G.E.D.
- Coding certification / credential through AHIMA or AAPC and be in good standing
- Score of 80% or above on assessment
- Excellent computer skills (navigating multiple systems, troubleshooting)
- Ability to work independently and maintain a remote coding work area that protects confidential health information
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Knowledge of ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS
Qualifications
- High School Diploma/G.E.D.
- Prior experience in hospital medical coding preferred, but will consider new coders.
Nice to Have
- Prior experience in hospital medical coding
- Prior experience with 3M 360 and EPIC system
