About This Role

This position serves as a first-line supervisor for a 20-person inmate Type 2 hand crew within the Department of Forestry and Fire Management. The role involves providing leadership and direction for staff and inmates in wildland fire suppression, wildland urban interface/intermix situations, and fuels mitigation projects. The incumbent will also act as a National Wildland Coordinating Group (NWCG) Qualified Crew Boss (CRWB) on fire suppression assignments.

Responsibilities

  • Direct a module of a 10 or 20 person Hand Crew
  • Establish guidelines and performance expectations for ADCRR staff members and inmate crew members
  • Ensure a safe and healthy work environment for the crew and others in charge
  • Ensure the crew fulfills assignments provided by incident command organization when assigned to wildland fires
  • Manage the scheduling of the crew for project work and provide informal feedback, evaluating crew performance
  • Ensure fire emergency readiness of the crew by providing nationally recognized fire training and maintaining equipment
  • Maintain crew records and financial documents, prepare crew use invoices, and manage equipment inventories
  • Drive on State business

Requirements

  • Knowledge of wildland fire suppression tactics and procedures
  • Knowledge of fuel types and fire behavior, fire management objectives, and firefighting strategies
  • Knowledge of other agency management objectives and policies, and the full range of suppression tactics
  • Practical knowledge of land use and resource management practices and policies
  • Knowledge of fuels management practices and policies
  • Knowledge of program management, supervision, and personnel practices and regulations
  • Knowledge of safety practices in suppressing fires and various other incidents
  • Knowledge of instructional techniques and training development standards
  • Skills in interpersonal dynamics and leadership in a hand crew environment
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Effective use of computers and applicable software
  • Operation and maintenance of specialized tools and equipment (chainsaws, chippers, firefighting hand tools, prescribed burning devices, ATV's, multi-channel radios, forestry measurement tools)
  • Mapping and Global Positioning System Equipment skills
  • Ability to apply resourcefulness, initiative, and independent judgment to wildfire incidents and fuels mitigation projects
  • Ability to plan and organize work efficiently
  • Ability to establish and maintain strong working relationships with DFFM, ADCRR personnel, and cooperators
  • Ability to interpret and understand technical reports and financial documents
  • Ability to adhere to State of Arizona and Department of Forestry and Fire Management Standards of Conduct, policies, procedures and practices
  • Ability to drive on state business for extended periods, including weekends and overnight stays

Nice to Have

  • Experience on Type 2, Type 2 IA, or Type 1 handcrew operations in various federal agencies
