Environmental Technician

About This Role

Perform a variety of routine technical duties to support OC San's environmental programs, including monitoring and sampling wastewater discharges and air emissions, and maintaining sampling equipment. This role is crucial for ensuring compliance with discharge permits.

Responsibilities

• Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with internal and external contacts
• Conduct surf zone sampling activities
• Prepare and maintain sampling equipment and supplies, including inventory, organizing, and labeling sample bottles
• Log and/or receive samples into a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
• Create and maintain chain-of-custodies
• Prepare glassware and labeling of test chambers
• Clean, maintain, repair, and calibrate sampling and laboratory equipment
• Order supplies, process samples for long-term preservation, and maintain the literature database and voucher collection
• Perform data entry and tabulation
• Maintain laboratory files and records, including documentation review
• Clean and maintain assigned vehicles, including washing and fueling
• Identify, troubleshoot, and correct routine and unexpected problems
• Wash and clean glassware on a routine basis or when instructed
• Perform general housekeeping tasks throughout the workday

Requirements

• High school diploma or G.E.D.
• Specialized training or coursework in chemistry, biology, or a related field
• One (1) year of related work experience, including basic sampling and laboratory testing
• Valid California Class C Driver's License

Qualifications

• High school diploma or G.E.D., supplemented by specialized training or coursework in chemistry, biology, or a related field
• 1 year of related work experience, including experience in performing basic sampling and laboratory testing

Nice to Have

• Knowledge and ability to perform techniques and methods of sampling, sterile technique, sample preservation and sample transport
• Knowledge of computer equipment and applications related to the work, including database and spreadsheet applications
• Knowledge and ability to perform basic techniques for gathering and reporting information; principles and procedures of record keeping; and techniques for providing a high-level of customer service
• Knowledge and ability to perform basic mathematical principles, English usage, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and punctuation
• Ability to follow established safety principles, practices and procedures
• Ability to understand related Federal, State, and local laws, ordinances, and procedures relevant to assigned area of responsibility
