This role is for a part-time Emergency Veterinary Assistant who will provide crucial support in triaging incoming patients, assisting with treatments and diagnostics, and learning advanced life-saving skills in a fast-paced veterinary emergency setting.
Responsibilities
- Provide a warm welcome and support, triaging incoming patients and guiding them toward care
- Assist with treatments, nursing care, and diagnostics including bloodwork, imaging, catheter placement, and oxygen support
- Collaborate with credentialed veterinary technicians and veterinarians to set up and monitor anesthesia and sedation cases
- Manage IV fluids, blood transfusions, and medication administration
- Assist during all aspects of patient care, both outpatient and inpatient, from exam room to treatment area
- Participate in patient rounds to ensure continuity of care
- Learn to perform CPR and become a RECOVER Certified Rescuer (training provided)
- Grow into more advanced responsibilities through guided training pathways
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- 1+ years in a veterinary assistant role
- Basic computer skills and understanding of practice management software and electronic medical record keeping
- Excellent communication skills with pet parents and team
- Fine motor skills for handling patients and medical equipment
- Ability to stand for prolonged hours, kneel, work on the floor, and lift up to 25 kg (support up to 40 kg with assistance)
- Willingness to work in a noisy environment with strong or unpleasant odors
- Availability to work nights, weekends, and holidays on a rotating or as needed basis
- Ability to work well in a fast-paced environment
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- 1+ years in a veterinary assistant role, with emergency or specialty experience as a bonus
Nice to Have
- Enrolled in an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology program
- Emergency or specialty veterinary experience
