The Directional Drill Operator is responsible for safely operating drilling equipment and locating predetermined paths to avoid utilities and other obstacles in telecommunications construction. This role involves maintaining equipment, assisting with various construction activities, and ensuring compliance with safety policies.
Responsibilities
- Operate drilling and various other construction equipment in compliance with company safety policies and procedures.
- Drill and/or locate predetermined path to exit point, avoiding marked utilities and implementing precautions to prevent strikes.
- Load and unload equipment from vehicles and trailers to assist in support of drilling operations.
- Responsible for regular maintenance and care of assigned heavy equipment, producing necessary documentation for each job, and daily communication with managers.
- Drive, set up, and break down drilling equipment safely and efficiently.
- Have knowledge of shoring systems and how to use them, and assist with rigging and setting structures.
- Assist in other activities such as placement of conduit, proofing conduits, potholing existing utilities, forming and pouring concrete, and placement of asphalt.
- Inspect and maintain job equipment.
- Adhere to all company policies, procedures, standards, and safety rules.
- Travel overnight to various sites as requested.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Minimum 1-year prior experience in drilling and using locating equipment to find underground utilities.
- Experience operating heavy equipment near active utilities.
- Valid driver's license (unrestricted) and acceptable driving record.
- Ability to pass a pre-employment drug test, background check, and MVR.
- Ability to operate equipment safely.
- Ability to read and understand plans and specifications.
- Knowledge of all OSHA, ANSI standards, and company rules & regulations.
- Basic computer skills.
- Experience and knowledge of basic shoring methods.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Minimum 1-year prior experience in drilling and using locating equipment to find underground utilities, with experience operating heavy equipment near active utilities.
Nice to Have
- Commercial driver's license (CDL) with tanker endorsement or willingness to obtain.
- DOT Medical Card or willingness to obtain.
- Experience with Ditch Witch and Vermeer equipment.
