This role involves ensuring the safety of meat, poultry, and processed egg products by inspecting food production environments and commodities. Consumer Safety Inspectors verify compliance with federal acts and HACCP principles to protect public health.
Responsibilities
- Verify plant HACCP and SSOP responsibilities
- Perform basic mathematics and elementary statistical concepts to perform testing and sampling procedures
- Reach and interpret conclusions based on inspections
- Apply proper techniques for collecting samples and performing field tests and examinations
- Develop written reports and report findings of results orally
- Maintain effective personal contacts with a variety of individuals to discuss findings
Requirements
- Knowledge of properties and characteristics of regulated food commodities (meat, poultry, fish, eggs, other food for human consumption, or other ingestible substances like pharmaceuticals)
- Ability to apply proper techniques for collecting samples and performing field tests/examinations
- Ability to identify abnormalities in product or production environment and recommend corrective actions
- Ability to develop written reports and/or report findings orally
- Skill in maintaining effective personal contacts with individuals regarding food safety standards
Qualifications
- At least 52 weeks of qualifying experience providing knowledge of properties and characteristics of regulated food commodities or other products for human consumption, acquired in roles such as consumer safety inspector, food inspector, or public health inspector.
Nice to Have
- One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-07 level (independently carrying out routine, standard assignments)
- Experience working with Federal Meat, Poultry, and Egg Products Inspection Acts
- Experience with basic SSOP and HACCP principles and practices
- Experience working at a more independent level (equivalent to GS-08 or GS-09 level)
