Protect public health by ensuring the safety of meat, poultry, and egg products as a Consumer Safety Inspector for the USDA-FSIS, working with regulated food commodities and production environments.
Responsibilities
- Apply proper techniques for collecting samples and/or performing field tests and examinations
- Identify abnormalities in the product or production environment and recommend corrective actions
- Develop written reports and/or report findings of results orally
- Document abnormalities in the product or production environment and communicate findings to others
- Maintain effective personal contacts with a variety of individuals to discuss findings regarding food safety standards
- Make determinations on products for human consumption or the production environment, ensuring conformance with established standards
- Carry out routine, standard assignments on a regular and recurring basis (GS-07 level)
- Work with Federal Meat, Poultry, and Egg Products Inspection Acts to inspect products (GS-08 level)
- Verify plant HACCP and SSOP responsibilities (GS-08 level)
- Perform basic mathematics and elementary statistical concepts and methods for testing and sampling procedures (GS-08 level)
Requirements
- Knowledge of properties and characteristics of regulated food commodities (e.g., meat, poultry, fish, eggs, pharmaceuticals)
- Ability to apply proper techniques for collecting samples and performing field tests
- Ability to identify abnormalities and recommend corrective actions
- Skill in developing written reports and communicating findings orally
- Skill in maintaining effective personal contacts
- Ability to make determinations on product conformance with standards
Qualifications
- Experience that provided knowledge of the properties and characteristics of regulated food commodities or other products for human consumption.
