Serve as an experienced network communications professional, providing consultation, evaluation, configuration, installation, troubleshooting, and testing of wireless network hardware and software for UC San Diego's campus-wide network.
Responsibilities
- Provide consultation, evaluation, installation and testing of network devices and network management systems including wireless access points, WLAN controllers, routers, switches, and other network equipment
- Install and troubleshoot devices on campus wireless, fiber optic, and Ethernet networks
- Resolve a wide range of complex network issues with a full understanding of industry practices and relevant policies
- Conduct expert-level RF troubleshooting, addressing interference, rogue access points, coverage issues, and hardware problems
- Conduct RF site surveys and field tests, including predictive surveys of buildings under construction
- Create wireless network Access Point placement designs considering various factors
- Implement complex Ethernet switch configuration and testing
Requirements
- Thorough understanding of various network hardware platforms, network related protocols and software including OSI layer 3 and layer 2 protocols
- Knowledge of and skilled with wireless 802.11 protocol suite, CAPWAP, WPA2, TCP/IP, SNMP, Ethernet, routing protocols
- Thorough knowledge of wireless RF and spectrum concepts and use in wireless data networks
- Ability to use wireless network management software and spectrum analyzer to document, configure, analyze, and troubleshoot wireless networks
- Practical hands-on experience with configuring wired and wireless network hardware (currently Cisco equipment) such as routers, switches, access points, WLAN controllers, and network management systems
- Working knowledge of industry best practices for AP placement and RF survey procedures
- Ability to independently conduct daily walking, in-field, RF surveys, RF troubleshooting/investigation, and AP troubleshooting
- Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel
- Valid driver's license

- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
- Experienced network communications professional
