About This Role

Join the Indian Health Service as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist to provide vital, life-saving diagnostics to American Indian communities. This role involves performing and evaluating a full range of clinical analyses, ensuring quality assurance, and maintaining laboratory operations and compliance.

Responsibilities

  • Perform and evaluate a full range of clinical analyses (chemistry, microbiology, hematology, immunology, molecular diagnostics, etc.) using manual and automated techniques to support patient diagnosis and treatment
  • Monitor and document quality control systems to ensure the accuracy, precision, and reliability of test results in compliance with policy and accrediting standards
  • Select established methodologies for requested analyses, implement basic corrective actions, calibrate and maintain laboratory instruments, and prepare required reagents and media
  • Offer technical assistance and training to laboratory personnel; recognize abnormal or unusual test results and consult with supervisors regarding corrective actions
  • Troubleshoot equipment issues; follow all safety, infection control, and regulatory requirements to ensure efficient and compliant laboratory performance

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Selective Service Registration (for males born after 12/31/1959)
  • Compliance with IHS Employee Immunization Policy
  • Successful completion of a federal background investigation
  • Financial responsibility
  • Ability to perform procedures of a routine and complex nature in all clinical laboratory sections
  • Ability to standardize and/or calibrate section instruments
  • Ability to prepare reagents and controls
  • Ability to maintain quality control
  • Ability to perform electronic standardization procedures for laboratory instrumentation function

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree from a regionally accredited college/university including courses in biological science, chemistry and mathematics, AND successful completion of a Medical Laboratory Scientist/Clinical Laboratory Scientist program accredited by NAACLS or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education; OR, a full 4-year course of study that included 12 months in a college or hospital-based medical technology program or medical technology school approved by a recognized accrediting organization; OR, a Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree from an accredited college/university, including 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) of biological science (with one semester in microbiology), 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) of chemistry (with one semester in organic or biochemistry), one semester (one quarter) of mathematics, AND five years of full time acceptable clinical laboratory experience in Blood Banking, Chemistry, Hematology, microbiology, Immunology and Urinalysis/Body Fluids.
  • Five years of full time acceptable clinical laboratory experience in Blood Banking, Chemistry, Hematology, microbiology, Immunology and Urinalysis/Body Fluids, or specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service performing procedures of a routine and complex nature in all clinical laboratory sections.
