About This Role

The Civil Engineer I or II performs engineering reviews of development plans and monitors regulated land disturbing activities to ensure compliance with County requirements. This role coordinates and conducts land development programs using professional engineering expertise, working under the general supervision of the Project Engineer.

Responsibilities

  • Review erosion and sediment control plans, stormwater management plans, highway plans, floodplain construction, drainage, and other engineering designs
  • Review site plans for new developments and subdivision requests regarding engineering aspects
  • Engage in engineering research and assist in preparing contract documents
  • Prepare cost estimates for engineering projects
  • Inspect floodplain development and major land alteration projects during construction for compliance
  • Respond to citizen complaints regarding construction activities, illicit discharges, and drainage systems
  • Participate in the preparation of specifications, maps, and plans for County construction development projects
  • Maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders involved in land use activities
  • Assist in preparing and updating land development regulations
  • Provide technical information related to development projects to contractors and the general public

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil, environmental engineering or related field
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certificate
  • Valid Virginia driver’s license with good driving record
  • Obtain DEQ certification as an Erosion and Sediment Control plan reviewer within 12 months
  • Obtain DEQ certification as a Stormwater Management plan reviewer within 12 months
  • Thorough knowledge of fundamental principles and practices of civil engineering
  • Knowledge of land and engineering survey systems, methods and techniques; site work construction materials; and construction safety standards
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office programs and other engineering software
  • Ability to read and interpret land development plans and calculations

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in civil, environmental engineering or related field
  • This is an entry level position; construction experience is desired but not required.
