Cardiothoracic Surgery Physician Assistant

About This Role

This role involves evaluating, diagnosing, treating, and managing a wide range of medical conditions for patients under the supervision of a physician, with a focus on cardiothoracic surgery. The Physician Assistant will collaborate with other healthcare providers to ensure comprehensive and coordinated patient care.

Responsibilities

• Participate in daily inpatient rounding, taking patient history, conducting physical exams, reviewing laboratory and diagnostic data, and performing medication reconciliation.
• Contribute specific surgical perspectives to daily multidisciplinary rounds and promote integrated comprehensive patient care.
• Conduct inpatient consultation and admission at the direction of the collaborating physician.
• Document all patient encounters through computerized progress notes, operative notes, procedural notes, or admission/consultation/discharge summaries.
• Perform pre-operative patient evaluation and medical optimization.
• Evaluate and treat patients with acute, chronic, and surgical concerns, including admission/consultation, medical history, physical examination, and collection/interpretation of diagnostic data.
• Order and interpret relevant laboratory, microbiological, radiologic, cardiac diagnostic tests, and develop treatment plans.
• Perform first/second surgical assist duties within the OR setting and/or at bedside, including assisting with heart/lung transplantation and various cardiothoracic surgeries.
• Assist with conduit harvest, sternotomy and sternal closure, ECMO initiation/weaning, and cannulation/decannulation techniques.
• Perform additional clinical responsibilities within the PA's level of training and scope of practice, including on-call coverage for outpatients.

Requirements

• 2+ years experience
• Graduate of a physician assistant program approved by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA)
• 2+ post-graduation clinical experience or one-year post-graduate surgical residency training experience
• 1+ cardiothoracic specialty specific experience
• Pre-Operative, Intra-Operative, Post-operative Surgical patient care experience
• Critical care experience
• National Commission of Certification of PA's
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support Cert (ACLS)
• Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS)
• Physician Assistant (PA)

Qualifications

• Graduate of a physician assistant program approved by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA)
• 2+ years post-graduation clinical experience or one-year post-graduate surgical residency training, with 1+ year cardiothoracic specialty specific experience
