Lead and direct medical coding teams across multiple locations, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, data integrity, and achieving financial and revenue cycle goals.
Responsibilities
- Select, train, coach, motivate, conduct performance evaluations, and direct the workflow for staff assigned to coding function
- Develop goals and performance expectations for staff in targeted areas, such as unbilled accounts receivable, quality and timeliness of clinical coding assignments, data integrity and reimbursement with third party payors
- Participate in the development of the department budget and ensure budgetary goals are met on an annual basis
- Drive organization performance improvements by refining and monitoring the coding scorecard, including unbilled A/R, Medicare second reviews, RAC denials, first time submission acceptance, coding accuracy, % clean claims, and staff stats
- Work collaboratively with other leaders to establish coding quality, productivity and best practices, and monitor goals and benchmarks productivity and quality standards
- Participate in developing standard coding policies/procedures/guidelines to ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulatory guidelines
- Monitor data integrity on a regular basis to ensure abstracted data elements meet requirements, perform staff training and education, and communicate with associated departments
- Keep abreast of new medical technologies, procedures and pending regulatory changes which impact the organization, and proactively analyze potential impact to minimize adverse effects
- Oversee coding for a designated coding team and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, coding accuracy, data integrity and/or complete and appropriate reimbursement from third party payors
Requirements
- Strong knowledge of business and/or healthcare
- 3+ years of progressive coding leadership experience
- Highly developed interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively
- Ability to work effectively with all common office software and coding software applications
- Thorough knowledge of computer applications and their applicability to coding
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in business, health care administration or related field
- 3+ years of progressive coding leadership experience preferably within a major health care organization or health system setting
