About This Role

Lead and direct designated medical coding teams across multiple locations, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, achieving business unit goals in targeted areas such as unbilled accounts receivable, and contributing to data integrity and reimbursement. Collaborate with Health Information Management System (HIMS) leadership to meet financial and revenue cycle goals and maintain coding compliance.

Responsibilities

  • Select, train, coach, motivate, and conduct performance evaluations for staff, directing their workflow in the coding function.
  • Develop goals and performance expectations for staff in areas like unbilled accounts receivable, quality and timeliness of clinical coding assignments, data integrity, and reimbursement.
  • Participate in the development of the department budget and ensure budgetary goals are met annually.
  • Drive organizational performance improvements by refining and monitoring the coding scorecard, including metrics like unbilled A/R, Medicare second reviews, and coding accuracy.
  • Collaborate with other leaders to establish coding quality, productivity, and best practices, monitoring goals and benchmarking against industry trends.
  • Participate in developing standard coding policies, procedures, and guidelines to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulatory guidelines.
  • Monitor data integrity regularly, perform staff training and education, and communicate with associated departments.
  • Keep abreast of new medical technologies, procedures, and pending regulatory changes, proactively analyzing their potential impact on the organization.

Requirements

  • Strong knowledge of business and/or healthcare
  • RHIA, RHIT or CCS active status with AHIMA or AAPC (for acute care)
  • CPC or CCS-P with RHIA, RHIT or CCS preferred (for ambulatory setting)
  • 3+ years progressive coding leadership experience
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively
  • Ability to work effectively with all common office software and coding software applications
  • Thorough knowledge of computer applications and their applicability to coding

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, health care administration or related field
  • 3+ years of progressive coding leadership experience preferably within a major health care organization or health system setting
