Animal Control Officer

About This Role

This is an Animal Control Officer position focused on enforcing and promoting responsible animal ownership programs within the city limits. The role involves investigative field work, animal rescue and containment, and may require working at the Animal Shelter.

Responsibilities

• Operate an animal care van for daily duties.
• Answer service calls dispatched from the Animal Services Center.
• Capture animals running at large and remove/dispose of dead animals.
• Transport unwanted, sick, and injured animals to the Animal Shelter or veterinary clinics.
• Investigate citizen complaints regarding "vicious animal" bites and animal confinement for leash law conformance.
• Develop preliminary recommendations on animal bite and cruelty cases.
• Use tranquilizer gun or firearm to contain or destroy animals as needed.
• Issue warnings or summonses to violators of leash law.
• Advise the public regarding compliance with health regulations and rabies protection.
• Maintain a log of daily activities.

Requirements

• Knowledge of animals and safe handling techniques.
• Ability to learn proper techniques for operating a radio and dispatching equipment.
• Thorough knowledge of leash laws and their application.
• Ability to work under adverse environmental conditions and outdoors in inclement weather.
• Ability to handle and lift animals weighing up to 50 pounds, and assist with larger animals.
• Ability to chase animals by vehicle and on foot.
• Ability to use animal control equipment (catch-pole, tranquilizer guns, hypodermic needle, nets, cat graspers, live animal traps).
• Ability to work in confined spaces and maintain functional body positions.
• Ability to make decisions within policy guidelines without supervision.
• Ability to maintain composure when destroying animals.
• Ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas driver's license.
