Veterinary Technician / Assistant

About This Role

The Veterinary Technician / Assistant supports hospital operations by providing dedicated quality veterinary care and exceptional service. This role involves patient care, assisting during medical procedures, maintaining medical equipment, and ensuring accurate record-keeping.

Responsibilities

• Determine animal requirements by conducting examinations and interviews, reviewing care plans, and completing diagnostic procedures
• Care for patients by taking vital signs, collecting samples, administering medications, drugs, and vaccines, and bandaging wounds
• Support patient examinations and operations by assembling supplies, securing and bringing patients to examination rooms, and restraining patients
• Provide excellent pet care by applying knowledge of anatomy, physiology, disease processes, pharmacology, and specialized equipment usage
• Ensure patients have food and water, clean rooms, cages, and equipment; observe patients for clinical signs of disease
• Fill prescriptions and administer medications as directed, including proper documentation and security of controlled drugs
• Maintain a safe, secure, healthy, and humane environment by sterilizing and wrapping instruments, sanitizing areas, and following legal regulations
• Maintain medical records by documenting patients' conditions, reactions, and changes; update the database accurately and timely
• Communicate with pet owners about patient status, as directed by the veterinarian
• Maintain equipment by following operating instructions, troubleshooting breakdowns, and performing preventive maintenance

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED
• Experience with veterinary appointments, surgeries, and nursing care for hospitalized and critical patients
• Knowledge of preparation, monitoring, and recovery of pets receiving surgery and basic pet nursing
• Ability to demonstrate and follow correct procedures in catheter placement, phlebotomy, emergency medicine, and digital radiology
• Ability to restrain patients according to standard procedures
• Ability to work with or around sick animals, potentially hazardous materials, and zoonotic diseases
• Able to lift or carry moderately heavy animals (up to 50 pounds)
