This role involves assisting the operating surgeon by performing technical behaviors that ensure a safe operative procedure. The Surgical First Assistant collaborates with the healthcare team and maintains knowledge of OR procedures, infection control, and regulatory compliance.
Responsibilities
- Assist the operating surgeon in performing a safe operative procedure by carrying out technical behaviors
- Collaborate with healthcare team members
- Perform other surgical team duties, such as scrub/turnover, when not functioning as first assistant
- Anticipate the needs of the surgeon, team members, and patient for specific surgical procedures
- Maintain procedure knowledge related to normal/abnormal anatomy and potential complications
- Confirm instrumentation is appropriate for patient age and size
Requirements
- Perioperative experienced Surgical Technologist
- Successfully completed a first assistant training program accredited by CAAHEP
- BLS certification
- Ability to maintain BLS per hospital policy
Qualifications
- Perioperative experienced Surgical Technologist
Nice to Have
- Certification as a Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA) from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)
