Supervising Deputy Attorney General - Civil Appeals

About This Role

The Supervising Deputy Attorney General will represent the State of Indiana, its agencies, and interests in civil and criminal cases before state and federal appellate courts. This role involves managing a substantial caseload, handling all aspects of appellate litigation, and providing supervision to other Deputy Attorneys General.

Responsibilities

• Represent the State of Indiana in civil appeals before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, Indiana Supreme Court, and Court of Appeals of Indiana
• Handle a substantial caseload and manage all aspects of assigned appeals, including deadlines, scheduling, motion practice, briefing, oral argument, and post-decision review
• Ensure all representation conforms with Rules of Appellate Procedure, office policies, and professional conduct rules
• Assist the Section Chief in reviewing briefs and formulating appellate litigation strategy
• Coordinate with the litigation division and other areas of the office
• Provide supervision to several Deputy Attorneys General as assigned
• Assist in other cases, research projects, supervision of law students, and administrative assignments

Requirements

• Admitted to the Indiana Bar
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Ability to relate effectively to both legal and non-legal professionals
• Ability to multi-task and manage a large case load
• Ability to zealously advocate on behalf of the State
• Ability to work well with others
• Proficient in computer skills
• Ability to competently manage relationships and effectively communicate with clients, supervisors, and colleagues
• Superior research and writing skills
• Persuasive written and oral appellate advocacy
