Join the Solid Waste Equipment Operator (SWEO) apprenticeship program to earn your Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and become a skilled SWEO for the City of Phoenix. This program provides detailed classroom and on-the-job training in safe, efficient, and customer-centered solid waste collection operations.
Responsibilities
- Operate solid waste collection equipment according to established policies, procedures, and regulations (OSHA, DOT, local, state, federal laws)
- Perform daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections of assigned vehicles, including a 7-step air brake check
- Read and understand collection route maps and follow designated routes
- Operate right-side driven equipment and navigate safely in various environments
- Report all unsafe situations or service-related issues, incidents, accidents, injuries, and property damage
- Attend and participate in required training programs, briefings, and meetings
- Use a GPS system and operate a two-way radio to communicate customer requests and service interruptions
- Identify needed equipment repairs and make necessary equipment adjustments
- Climb in and out of equipment multiple times each day and perform light manual labor
- Provide customer service to internal and external customers and meet established performance standards
- Maneuver a large vehicle through tight spaces and turns
- Up-right overturned containers and clean up solid waste spills as needed
- Work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the outdoor elements
Requirements
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must hold a Class D or equivalent license for one year and prove one year of driving experience in a vehicle other than a motorcycle
- High School Diploma or GED at the time of hire
- Clean driving record
- Successfully pass City drug and background check
- Able to work early mornings, mandatory overtime, irregular hours, second/third shifts, weekends, holidays, and evenings
- Able to work for prolonged periods standing/walking over uneven surfaces and outside in extreme environmental conditions
- Able to move heavy objects (50+ pounds) short distances
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED
- No experience required, including not needing a CDL prior to starting the program. Must have held Class D or equivalent license for one year and have one year of driving experience in a vehicle other than a motorcycle.
