This Planner II position in the Site Planning section of the Planning & Development Department guides the physical development of the City of Phoenix by reviewing plans for code compliance and coordinating with developers and other disciplines. The role requires an understanding of City codes and ordinances, negotiating with developers, and making recommendations with significant autonomy.
Responsibilities
- Review plans for code compliance and coordinate with other disciplines to ensure stipulations are implemented
- Provide assistance to developers through the planning and development process
- Attend development meetings and public meetings related to planning projects
- Negotiate with developers and other departments regarding established stipulations from public hearing processes
- Develop long-term relationships with developers due to long-term project assignments and repeat submissions
- Perform major planning functions or projects requiring skill in research, analysis, development, presentation, or interpretation of concepts and data
- Make recommendations and project decisions with a significant amount of autonomy
Requirements
- 2 years of experience in the field of urban planning
- Bachelor's degree in City or urban planning, landscape architecture, engineering, architecture, political science, or a related field
- Knowledge of zoning ordinances, State and Local codes, and all disciplines in the development process
- Understanding of City of Phoenix development review and permitting process
- Proficient written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present to diverse audiences
- Ability to attend public meetings
- Ability to operate vehicles safely and possess a valid driver's license (for positions requiring vehicle use)
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in city or urban planning, landscape architecture, engineering, architecture, political science, a related field, or a field related to the specialty area.
- 2+ years of experience in the field of urban planning.
Nice to Have
- Experience as a planner in municipal/county or private sector
- Experience providing skilled communication, written and oral, to diverse audiences
- Experience working with the Public or at a public counter providing customer service
- At least six months of experience working for an Arizona municipality
- Experience with public presentation, meetings, or hearing
- Experience with plan review and preparing plans for submittal
- Experience in Urban Design and Design Review
- Experience communicating and enforcing regulations
- Experience using GIS (Geographic Information System) software
- Certified Planner from American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP)
