The Skilled Laborer performs journeyman-level manual work in Public Works, focusing on the construction, maintenance, and repair of the drinking water system within the Town of West Springfield. This role involves comprehensive duties related to water infrastructure.
Responsibilities
- Install water systems, including pipe, valves, fire hydrants, pumps, meters, and service lines
- Identify and repair service line and water main leaks
- Perform leak detection using correlation and hydrophone equipment
- Conduct gate valve exercising with an electric valve turner and exercise system blow-off valves, air-vacuum valves, and inline valves
- Perform annual fire hydrant inspections and maintain/repair fire hydrants
- Perform water meter repair and/or replacement
- Conduct unidirectional flushing
- Respond to and resolve emergencies outside of normal working hours
- Read and update water distribution records
- Excavate trenches and install shoring, establishing proper traffic control devices
- Mark underground water and sewer utilities for DigSafe
- Handle complaints and answer questions from the public and maintain tools and equipment in working order
- Maintain pump stations, storage facilities, and headquarters, including mowing, snow removal, cleaning, and painting
Requirements
- High school graduation or equivalent
- Two years' experience in Public Works construction or maintenance work
- General knowledge of methods, procedures, equipment, and materials relating to water system construction and maintenance tasks
- Ability to lift heavy materials and carry assigned work to completion
- Possession of a valid Massachusetts driver's license
- Drinking Water Supply Facilities Certified Grade D1 (OIT) Operator issued by the Massachusetts Division of Professional Licensure within 1 year of employment
- Full Drinking Water Supply Facilities Certified Grade D1 Operator issued by the Massachusetts Division of Professional Licensure within 2 years
Qualifications
- High school graduation or equivalent
- Two years' experience in Public Works construction or maintenance work
