Provide interpreting and transliterating services in American Sign Language (ASL) for Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) employees within a Federal Government setting. Facilitate communication for complex, classified, and highly technical discussions across various disciplines.
Responsibilities
- Provide reasonable accommodations by using American Sign Language (ASL) to facilitate communication between D/deaf or Hard of Hearing (DHH) ASL users and hearing spoken-English users.
- Deliver American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation and transliterating services for complex, classified, highly technical, sensitive, and unique situations including polygraphs and high-profile platform interpreting.
- Prepare appropriately for assignments by reading materials, researching terminology for technical communications, and understanding presenter/audience language styles.
- Provide education or consultation to facilitate interactions for employees, associates, and visitors.
- Demonstrate superior working knowledge and accurate interpretation of various ASL modalities including Pidgin Signed English (PSE) and Manually Coded English (MCE).
- Exhibit discretion, professionalism, and sensitivity in the workplace and commute to satellite offices as required.
- Travel CONUS and OCONUS to provide accommodations and perform tasks involving repetitive motions, prolonged standing/walking/kneeling, and under various environmental conditions.
- Suggest best practice solutions for interpreting problems/issues and maintain accurate, timely accounting of assignments.
Requirements
- RID Certification (Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf)
- Ongoing adherence to the RID Code of Professional Conduct (CPC)
- Superior working knowledge of American Sign Language (ASL), Pidgin Signed English (PSE), and Manually Coded English (MCE)
- Ability to interpret/transliterate highly specialized terminology and adapt to various interpreting settings
- Familiarity with STEM content for language translation purposes
- Experience with Intranet, Internet, Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Access, PowerPoint, Excel)
Qualifications
- Degree in any field is acceptable for entry level; Bachelor's degree plus 4 years or Master's plus 1 year for full performance; Bachelor's degree plus 7 years or Master's plus 4 years or Doctorate plus 2 years for senior level.
- Minimum experience varies by education level, ranging from 0 years with a Master's degree to 9 years with a HS diploma for Full Performance entry. For Senior level, 7 years with a Bachelor's degree, 4 years with a Master's, or 2 years with a Doctorate.
Nice to Have
- Minimum of 4 years' experience as a RID-certified ASL Interpreter
- At least 1 year of experience as an ASL Interpreter in the DOD or Intelligence Community
