AI Engineer

About This Role

As an AI Engineer at NSA, you will design and implement mission-critical AI systems to advance intelligence collection, processing, and reporting. This specialized role intersects data science, software engineering, data engineering, and systems engineering, focusing on the entire AI lifecycle from development to optimization.

Responsibilities

• Lead or contribute to cross-functional teams to develop and operationalize AI solutions
• Apply modern engineering techniques to design, develop, deploy, and maintain end-to-end AI workflows
• Adapt and integrate diverse AI model architectures to address complex mission-critical challenges
• Monitor and maintain AI products through systematic identification of performance degradation and computational inefficiency
• Maintain knowledge of current AI research and adapt emerging techniques to intelligence applications
• Test and evaluate AI solutions against mission requirements and produce actionable recommendations

Requirements

• Ability to pass the Data Science Examination (DSE) evaluating knowledge of statistics, mathematics, and computer science
• Associate's degree plus relevant experience; or Bachelor's, Master's, or Doctoral degree as specified for entry level

Qualifications

• Associate's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, Information Technology, Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Applied Statistics, Operations Research, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, or Physical or Biological Sciences, or a Bachelor's, Master's, or Doctoral degree in one of these fields.
• Entry level: Associate's degree + 2-3 years, Bachelor's degree + 0-1 years, Master's degree + 0 years. Full Performance: Associate's degree + 5 years, Bachelor's degree + 3 years, Master's degree + 1 year, Doctoral degree + 0 years. Senior: Associate's degree + 8 years, Bachelor's degree + 6 years, Master's degree + 4 years, Doctoral degree + 2 years. Expert: Associate's degree + 11 years, Bachelor's degree + 9 years, Master's degree + 7 years, Doctoral degree + 5 years. Relevant experience in AI/ML solution implementation, distributed model training, AI/ML systems, performance monitoring, platform/cloud engineering, deep learning models, neural networks, MLOps, DevOps, software engineering, automated testing, or containerization.
