About This Role

Advise internal client organizations on compliance with federal, state, and local regulations and represent Southern California Edison before regulatory and enforcement agencies. This role involves drafting legal filings, advocating company positions, and managing relationships with outside counsel.

Responsibilities

  • Advise internal client organizations regarding compliance with applicable federal, state, and local statutes, regulations and policies
  • Represent the Company in a lead counsel capacity before regulatory and enforcement agencies, including the California Public Utilities Commission
  • Draft and prepare regulatory filings, testimonies and reports and advocate Company business, policy, and legal positions at hearings
  • Work with SCE personnel in other departments and external third parties to gather information pertaining to highly complex legal, technical, and/or sensitive issues
  • Contribute to cross-functional or departmental projects and teams
  • Direct and manage outside counsel retained to support the company's legal needs
  • Serves as Lead Attorney or First Chair on medium-sized or more discrete legal matters, or Second Chair on significant legal matters
  • Anticipate and identify critical legal operating, technological, and environmental risks and develop mitigation strategies
  • Provide legal advice on complex issues with significant strategic or performance implications
  • Leads the negotiating and drafting of a wide variety of agreements or submissions

Requirements

  • Member of California bar or willing to obtain license
  • Seven or more years of experience practicing as an attorney
  • Demonstrates experience handling moderately sophisticated legal matters independently or discrete aspects of a larger complex matter

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and hold a Juris Doctor (J.D.)
  • Seven or more years of experience practicing as an attorney

  • Experience in the utility or energy industry
  • Experience interacting with federal, state, or local agencies or courts
  • Ability to independently handle proceedings as lead attorney in matters before regulatory agencies, such as the California Public Utilities Commission, or first chair-level court experience
  • Experience working with client organizations to develop and carry-out strategic initiatives
  • Strategic problem solver with strong analytical ability to provide legal advice within a business context
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to simultaneously manage a variety of assignments, work quickly and effectively under deadlines, and prioritize activities and risk
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team
