Principal Planner

About This Role

This Principal Planner role is safety-sensitive, focusing on planning for the city's growth and administering zoning ordinances. The selected candidate will prepare and present agendas, review development plans, and advise various city boards and the public on urban planning matters to ensure orderly development.

Responsibilities

• Prepare meeting agendas, staff comments, illustrations, and legal notices for the Board of Zoning Appeals
• Review preliminary and final plats, site plans, and architectural elevations for compliance with regulations
• Present to the Planning Commission in public televised settings and serve in an advisory role
• Advise the Planning Commission regarding annexation, zoning change, and land use topics
• Present cases to the Board of Zoning Appeals and provide professional guidance
• Present to City Council in public hearing settings, conveying Planning Commission recommendations
• Advise the public on zoning boundaries, corporate limits, development requirements, and amendment procedures
• Evaluate compliance with zoning and other city ordinances through on-site inspections and investigations
• Research demographic and economic information and write reports for various commissions and councils
• Review new development plans for addressing/street naming and Board of Zoning Appeals issues
• Investigate and enforce violations of the City's Zoning Ordinance

Requirements

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Urban Planning, Public Administration, or related field
• Four years of progressively responsible experience as an Urban Planner
• Valid driver's license

• 4+ years of progressively responsible experience as an Urban Planner
