About This Role

The Perioperative Assistant works in a Perioperative setting, carrying out clinician's orders, performing established patient care procedures, and participating in patient education. This role supports healthcare providers in delivering quality patient care and includes clerical responsibilities to facilitate area flow.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out clinician's orders within a Perioperative setting
  • Perform established patient care procedures
  • Participate in patient education commensurate with appropriate training
  • Work effectively with healthcare providers to assure quality patient care
  • Maintain strict patient confidentiality
  • Perform clerical responsibilities to facilitate flow in Perioperative Services
  • Greet and welcome patients, assisting with appointments and payments
  • Answer multi-line phone, screen and route calls, and take messages
  • Communicate status of patients to families and connect them with resources
  • Assist RNs in maintaining a professional and caring atmosphere for patients
  • Transport patients between various departments
  • Provide a clean, safe, and orderly work and patient care environment
  • Collect and send specimens to the hospital laboratory
  • Collect data as directed by the RN
  • Disassemble and route medical records upon discharge, transfer, or expiration
  • May assist in Pre Op and/or PACU duties including obtaining vitals and NPO status
  • Monitor and maintain clinical supplies and order replacements
  • Prepare patient exam rooms before visits to ensure proper equipment and supplies

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • One (1) year of directly related work experience
  • RQI Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support or Basic Life Support by American Heart Association (AHA) certification
  • Ability to speak, read, write, and understand English effectively
  • Knowledge of basic nursing and medical terminology

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • One (1) year of directly related work experience

  • Ability to problem-solve effectively
  • Knowledge of cardiopulmonary resuscitation methods
  • Knowledge of computer systems and software
  • Knowledge of normal vital signs for adults, adolescents, children, and infants
  • Knowledge of protocols for patient records
  • Knowledge of role in emergency response
  • Knowledge of facility layout for efficient transport
  • Knowledge of safety code measures during patient transport
  • Skill in use of monitoring equipment (oxygen saturation, cardiorespiratory monitor, thermometer)
  • Ability to maneuver wheelchairs, gurneys, and other equipment
