Paraprofessional

About This Role

The Paraprofessional will provide individualized and academic support to students, reinforcing classroom learning, assisting with homework, and preparing them for tests. This role involves implementing positive behavior strategies, monitoring progress, and collaborating with parents and teachers to ensure consistency in student development.

Responsibilities

• Create and deliver individualized lessons tailored to the student's IEP or 504 Plan
• Reinforce classroom learning, help with homework, and prepare for tests
• Implement positive behavior strategies and maintain a supportive learning environment
• Assess and track the student's academic and developmental progress
• Communicate and collaborate with parents, teachers, and support staff for consistency
• Use and teach assistive technology like speech-to-text software or specialized apps
• Build student confidence, teach social skills, and address emotional challenges
• Adjust lessons based on the student's needs and energy levels
• Help students understand and advocate for their own learning needs
• Prepare lesson plans, document sessions, and ensure compliance with special education standards

Requirements

• New York State Teaching Certification in Special Education
• Good standing with the NYS Department of Education
• Bachelor's Degree in education, special education, or a related field
• 1-3 years of experience teaching or tutoring students with disabilities
• Experience with IEPs (Individualized Education Programs) and 504 Plans

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree (minimum requirement) in education, special education, or a related field
• 1-3 years of experience teaching or tutoring students with disabilities

Nice to Have

• Master's Degree in special education or a related discipline
• Experience with specific disabilities (e.g., autism, ADHD, dyslexia)
• Familiarity with adaptive technology or assistive devices
• Proven success in improving academic outcomes for students with special needs
• Knowledge of New York State Learning Standards and curriculum
• Experience working with diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds
