About This Role

The On-Call Wildlife Biologist will conduct field surveys for special-status species and habitats, perform environmental compliance monitoring, and coordinate with construction crews in Santa Cruz and Monterey counties. This role involves evaluating project plans for impacts on biological resources and preparing daily field notes.

Responsibilities

  • Perform field surveys for special-status species, natural communities, and habitats, including walking transects, mapping habitat boundaries, trapping or collecting specimens, and identifying animals by sight and sound.
  • Perform environmental compliance monitoring, preconstruction clearance surveys, and environmental awareness training, coordinating closely with construction crews.
  • Evaluate project plans in coordination with the task lead to determine potential impacts on special-status species and other biological resources.
  • Prepare daily field notes summarizing field survey results, monitoring responsibilities, and compliance with environmental permits.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience with biological monitoring, construction monitoring, field surveys for special-status species and natural communities in Santa Cruz and Monterey counties
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to pass a Motor Vehicle Records (MVR) check

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Sciences, Environmental Science, or other related field of study.
  • 3+ years of experience with biological monitoring, construction monitoring, and field surveys for special-status species and natural communities and habitats in and around Santa Cruz and Monterey counties.

Nice to Have

  • Experience conducting surveys and monitoring for special-status amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals, including species of the Zayante Sandhills and Santa Cruz Mountains.
  • Federal and state permits for listed or endangered wildlife.
  • Nesting bird/raptor survey experience.
  • Experience with monitoring construction crews and overseeing environmental compliance.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel, data entry and formatting, GPS technology, and data collection in the field.
