The Occupational Therapist is responsible for assessing and directly administering occupational therapy treatments as prescribed by a licensed physician. This role involves interacting professionally with patients and families, performing assessments across various patient populations, and planning individualized treatment programs to improve physical functioning.
Responsibilities
- Interact professionally with patients/families, treating them with respect and dignity and addressing their psychosocial, cultural, ethnic and religious/spiritual needs.
- Communicate effectively and appropriately with patients, physicians, family members and co-workers, demonstrating customer service excellence.
- Perform appropriate assessments on all patients related to therapy requested and provided, and reassessments as per policy, including neonate, pediatric, adolescent, geriatric patients.
- Supervise and delegate care provided by certified occupational therapy assistants, therapy technicians, aides, students, and other support personnel according to licensing laws and practice standards.
- Administer treatment involving application of physical agent modalities using equipment, moist packs, ultraviolet and infrared lamps, and ultrasound machines.
- Perform therapy interventions utilizing standard occupational therapy techniques and skills appropriate for the age and condition of the patient.
- Evaluate, fit, and adjust prosthetic and orthotic devices and recommend modifications.
- Plan, prepare, and carry out individually designed programs of treatment to maintain, improve or restore physical functioning, alleviate pain and prevent physical dysfunction in patients.
- Formulate a teaching plan based upon identified learning needs and evaluate effectiveness of learning, including family in teaching as appropriate.
- Establish a plan of care appropriate to identified problems, involving the patient, and documenting goals, anticipated progress, and reevaluation plans.
- Plan and/or assist with patient discharge from therapy services, providing information regarding appropriate selection/use of adaptive equipment and support programs.
Requirements
- Degree from an Occupational Therapy Program
- Current Occupational Therapy License as required by the state of practice
- National Board Certification for Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) certification
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- Basic computer knowledge
- Critical thinking skills and decisive judgment
- Ability to work with minimal supervision
- Proficient time management skills
- Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language
Qualifications
- Degree from an Occupational Therapy Program
- 1 year preferred.
